500 ml, 1 ltr, 2 ltr or 5 ltr: Which Bilonaa Ghee Size Should You Buy?

Buying the wrong ghee size is the most common mistake in this category. Buy too small and you are reordering every three weeks and paying shipping again and again. Buy too big and the jar sits open for months, gets handled with a dozen different spoons, and loses the aroma you paid a premium for. The right size is simply the one your kitchen finishes in eight to twelve weeks.

Start by measuring, not guessing. One tablespoon is roughly 14 ml. A tadka for a dal is one to two tablespoons, a paratha takes about one, and a halwa or laddoo batch can take a hundred ml in one go. Most Indian families under-estimate their own use by half — count a week honestly and multiply by four, and the correct pack size becomes obvious immediately.

The 500 ml jar is for testing and for small households. If you have never tasted true bilonaa-method A2 ghee, start here. It is also the right permanent size for a couple, for a working single-person kitchen, or for a household that uses ghee mainly as a finishing fat on roti and dal rather than for frying. At normal use it lasts six to ten weeks.

The 1 ltr jar is the Indian default. A family of four cooking daily Indian food — tadka, roti, an occasional sweet — will finish a litre in roughly six to eight weeks. This is the size we ship most, and it is the size we would recommend to anyone who is past the trial stage but not cooking in bulk.

The 2 ltr jar is for joint families and festival months. Once there are six or more people at the table, or once Diwali and wedding-season cooking begins, a litre disappears alarmingly fast. Two litres removes the mid-month reorder, and the per-litre price starts working in your favour. It is also the practical choice for families who make their own laddoo and halwa at home rather than buying them.

The 5 ltr steel dolchi is for serious consumption. Temples, caterers, tiffin kitchens, and large joint households buying for the year should look here. This size ships in a food-grade stainless steel dolchi rather than glass — it is unbreakable, blocks light completely, and gives the best value per litre we offer. Just be honest about whether you will finish it within a few months.

Bigger is only cheaper if you finish it. Per-litre pricing always favours the larger pack, but ghee is a slow food, not a bulk commodity. A 5 ltr dolchi opened daily for eight months, with occasional wet spoons and a lid left half-closed, will taste worse by the end than three separate 1 ltr jars would have. Buy the size that matches your kitchen rhythm, and let the price advantage follow from that.

A trick for large packs: decant. If you do buy 2 ltr or 5 ltr, keep a small 500 ml jar as your daily working jar and refill it once a week. The main pack then gets opened four times a month instead of sixty, which keeps the bulk of your ghee sealed, dark and untouched. This is exactly how ghee was managed in old Indian kitchens with a big dolchi and a small katori.

Gifting changes the maths. For festival and wedding gifting, two 500 ml jars usually make a better impression than one litre jar — they look considered, they are easier to carry, and the recipient can share one. For close family who cook seriously, a 1 ltr jar of real bilonaa ghee is a genuinely useful gift rather than a decorative one.

Whatever size you pick, the ghee is identical. Every Bilonaa pack — 500 ml, 1 ltr, 2 ltr or the 5 ltr dolchi — holds the same hand-churned A2 Rathi cow ghee made in Bikaner by the traditional bilonaa method, under FSSAI licence 22226025000262. Only the container changes. Choose the one your kitchen will actually finish while it is still at its best.

FAQs

Quick answers

How much ghee does an average Indian family use per month?

A family of four cooking daily Indian food typically uses 400 to 700 ml a month, which means a 1 ltr jar lasts roughly six to eight weeks. Count your own week honestly and multiply by four for an accurate figure.

Which ghee size should a first-time buyer pick?

Start with 500 ml. It is enough to judge aroma, grain and taste properly across a few weeks of cooking without committing to a large pack of a brand you have not tried.

Is the 5 litre pack cheaper per litre?

Yes, it offers the best value per litre. But it is only genuinely cheaper if your kitchen finishes it within a few months — otherwise you lose in freshness what you saved in price.

Does the 5 litre pack come in glass?

No. It ships in a food-grade stainless steel dolchi because glass at that weight is fragile and awkward. Steel is inert, unbreakable and blocks light completely.

How can I keep a large pack fresh?

Decant into a small 500 ml working jar once a week and keep the main pack sealed and stored away from light and heat. That way the bulk of your ghee is opened four times a month instead of daily.

Which size is best for gifting?

Two 500 ml jars usually gift better than a single litre — easier to carry and easier to share. For family who cook seriously, a 1 ltr jar of real bilonaa ghee is a genuinely useful gift.
